As part of our project in Chad, funded by the European Union, we are supporting the National Coalition of Authorities for Mediation and Strengthening Voices for Peace in Chad (CONAMM) in strengthening the capacities of its community relays and extending its presence across the country.

The initiative consists of a series of training workshops for CONAMM’s community relays across 14 provinces, starting in Moyen-Chari and extending to Chari-Baguirmi. Fifteen community relays are being trained in each province, for a total of 210 participants. The activity also includes establishing a CONAMM provincial focal point in each of the 14 provinces, formally introduced to the relevant local authorities.

The training focuses on the prevention and management of community conflicts, mediation, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence. Particular attention is given to Chadian endogenous mechanisms for dialogue, mediation and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, with the aim of strengthening locally rooted approaches to peace and social cohesion.

The sessions are designed around a practical and participatory methodology. Participants engage in presentations and discussions, debates, case studies, simulations, role plays and practical exercises, allowing them to apply the knowledge developed during the training to situations related to community conflict prevention and management. CONAMM members deployed from N’Djamena deliver the workshops, supported by previously trained provincial focal points.

Establishing provincial focal points is an important component of the activity. By strengthening CONAMM’s presence at the provincial level and establishing direct links with local authorities, the initiative supports the organisation’s capacity to carry out awareness-raising, mediation and advocacy activities closer to communities.

Our support to CONAMM forms part of a broader partnership built around three complementary areas: strengthening technical capacities; supporting awareness-raising, mediation and advocacy activities; and reinforcing communication and visibility. CONAMM brings together traditional and religious authorities, as well as elders engaged in mediation and peacebuilding, with a mandate to promote peace through mediation and the use of endogenous mechanisms for conflict prevention and management.

Through this support, we are contributing to strengthening the capacity of community actors to prevent and manage conflicts while reinforcing mechanisms for dialogue and peaceful coexistence across the country. By supporting the mobilisation of traditional and religious authorities and strengthening their engagement at the provincial level, we are also contributing to their participation in the democratic process and peace consolidation in Chad.

The activity therefore combines capacity-building with stronger local structures, providing CONAMM with a wider network of trained community relays and provincial focal points to support its mediation and peacebuilding work across Chad.
