As part of our EU-funded project in Chad, we are supporting the National Coalition of Authorities for Mediation and Strengthening the Voices of Peace in Chad (CONAMM) in expanding its community mediation activities around the country.

Through a series of training workshops organised in the provinces, this support strengthens local capacities for conflict prevention and management, while bringing peacebuilding initiatives closer to the communities involved.

The first phase of this initiative, led by CONAMM Secretary-General Yohana Banyara, focused on southern Chad. So far, this series of activities has taken place in the cities of Sarh (Moyen-Chari province), Koumra (Mandoul), Doba (Eastern Logone), Moundou (Western Logone), and Laï (Tandjilé). It will continue in Pala (West Mayo-Kebbi) and conclude in Bongor (East Mayo-Kebbi). The program aims to train 15 community liaisons in each of the 14 provinces involved to build a network of participants capable of contributing to awareness-raising, mediation, and conflict-prevention activities at the local level.

Beyond the training sessions, the initiative aims to strengthen CONAMM’s presence in the provinces sustainably. A focal point is established in each province and introduced to the relevant local authorities to facilitate links between the organization’s activities, existing community structures, and local institutions. This coordination fosters early dialogue, encourages the peaceful resolution of disputes, and strengthens ties between communities and mediation actors.

The workshops focus particularly on Chad’s traditional and endogenous mechanisms for dialogue and conflict resolution. Through practical exercises and participatory discussions, community liaisons develop approaches they can apply in their own contexts, drawing on local practices of mediation and collective dispute resolution.

CONAMM brings together traditional and religious authorities, as well as people previously engaged in mediation and peacebuilding. By supporting its provincial network and strengthening community liaisons' capacities, we help promote local approaches to conflict prevention, social cohesion, and peacebuilding throughout Chad.
