Moroni, 2 June 2025 — As part of the Shawiri project funded by the European Union, ECES (European Centre for Electoral Support), in collaboration with the French Embassy to the Union of the Comoros, held a key feedback seminar and national conference addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in the criminal justice system.
The seminar brought together gendarmerie, police officers, magistrates, and civil society representatives who participated in GBV training sessions in 2024. Throughout the day, participants reflected on the knowledge gained and the practical changes implemented in their daily work. The sessions served as an opportunity to evaluate the impact of the training and explore further improvements.
Discussions also focused on the establishment of a medico-legal unit to support survivors, as well as proposals to strengthen the legal and institutional framework. Coordination among justice actors and service providers emerged as a key theme, with participants emphasizing the importance of streamlined efforts across institutions.
The initiative continues on 3 June, with a national conference featuring senior representatives from key institutions—including the Commander of the Gendarmerie, the Attorney General, a gynecologist, and a delegate from the French Red Cross. These stakeholders will present the seminar’s conclusions to the Ministers of Justice and Gender Promotion, aiming to bolster high-level advocacy for a more robust and responsive criminal justice system in tackling gender-based violence.
