It is with deep sadness that ECES has learned of the death of Mr. Pierre Buyoya, former President of Burundi and High Representative of the African Union (AU) for Mali and the Sahel from 2012 to 2020.
The last time ECES Executive Director Fabio Bargiacchi and Prágmata Managing Director Piero Scarpellini met with Pierre Buyoya was at the end of 2019 on the occasion of the 6th Annual Continental Forum of Electoral Management Bodies of the African Union.
In this context, they had the opportunity to discuss democratic processes in Africa, particularly the potential support of ECES to the electoral process in Mali.
It is with great sorrow that we pay our respects to Mr Buyoya whom we are honoured to have known. We thank him warmly for the friendship and availability he has always shown towards ECES.
Our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones, to whom we extend our most sincere condolences on behalf of all ECES staff.
