The “Pro-Electoral Integrity – Phase 3” project is an initiative implemented by the African Union Commission (AUC), through the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (AUC-PAPS), and ECES, with funding from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation under the Italian-African Peace Facility (IAPF).
The aim of the project is to contribute to peace, security and the consolidation of democracy in Africa by strengthening electoral integrity and democratic resilience. The initiative supports the capacities of African electoral authorities, their regional networks and other actors involved in electoral processes, promoting credible, inclusive and transparent elections that comply with international standards.
The project focuses in particular on the areas of electoral conflict prevention, the promotion of the rule of law, transitional justice and the political participation of women and young people. Key activities include technical assistance and election observation missions, capacity-building programmes, support for democratic institutions and initiatives dedicated to the peaceful management of political and electoral processes.
The third phase of the project focuses primarily on African countries undergoing major electoral processes or political transitions, including Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal and South Sudan, as well as contexts characterised by unconstitutional changes of government such as Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon.
Thanks to collaboration between African and European institutions, the project serves as a strategic tool for promoting stability, democratic governance and crisis prevention on the African continent, fostering a shared culture of electoral integrity and democratic participation.
