As part of the joint missions of the Association of African Electoral Authorities (AAEA) and the Réseau des Organes de Gestion des Élections en Afrique Centrale (ROGEAC), the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES), through the Pro-Electoral Integrity Project funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), organized the LEAD–Artificial Intelligence (LEAD-AI) Training Workshop in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
This four-day training brought together participants from the electoral commission of Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius and the Elections Cameroon (ELECAM). The workshop aimed to strengthen leadership and management capacities by introducing participants to the opportunities and challenges of applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) within electoral processes and governance systems.
The LEAD-AI module builds on ECES’s flagship LEAD (Leadership and Conflict Management Skills for Electoral Stakeholders) programme and integrates AI-focused components that explore how technology can improve strategic planning, evidence-based decision-making, communication, and transparency across the electoral cycle.
Through interactive sessions and group work, participants examined the potential use of AI in voter registration, logistics, data management, civic and voter education, results transmission, and post-election analysis. Discussions also addressed ethical considerations, data protection, and the role of AI in promoting inclusive participation and accountability.
