On 24 November, the Third National Meeting of Elected Assembly Members: "Parliamentary mandate against violence against women", supported by the ECES among other partners, and led by la Coordinadora de la Mujer, was inaugurated by the Ambassador of Spain Fernando García, the head of the political section of the European Union Adolfo Campos, María Thalia of the Movement Women Together in History, Mónica Baya of the Human Rights Community, Bolivia Sánchez of the Ombudsman's Office, and Tania Sánchez, director of the Women's Coordinator.
The Meeting, held within the framework of November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, aimed to deepen the collective commitment to women's right to a life free of violence. It was proposed to strengthen the political and legislative commitment of the new national assembly members to eradicate violence against women, through awareness, information, and coordination, consolidating parliamentary action with the principles of equality, human rights and parity democracy.
In Bolivia, violence against women continues to be one of the most serious and persistent violations of human rights, despite the progress made with Law No. 348, the Comprehensive Law to Guarantee Women a Life Free of Violence. In this context, the new legislators have a key role: to defend and strengthen policies for the protection, prevention and punishment of violence, guaranteeing compliance with the Constitution and international human rights treaties.
The event included the keynote lecture “The region looks to Bolivia: without setbacks in the face of violence” and the Belém do Pará hemispheric report and Bolivia country report, by Luz Patricia Mejía Guerrero, technical secretary of the MESECVI (Follow-up Mechanism of the Convention of Belém do Pará, Organization of American States OAS).
ECES, through its PRO-ELECTION Bolivia project funded by the European Union, participated in this important initiative. ECES Senior Gender Expert, Katia Uriona, highlighted the importance of collective action to strengthen public policies, parity democracy and the fight against violence against women. She expressed her gratitude to the European Union for supporting efforts that protect fundamental rights and reinforce women’s participation and leadership.
