In Moroni, on 26 January 2026, an important step was taken towards gender equality in the Union of the Comoros. At the headquarters of the National Commission for Human Rights and Freedoms (CNDHL), the VIADuQ Charter was officially adopted by several civil society organizations, sealing their commitment to strengthening women’s presence in decision-making spaces.

This initiative is part of the Shawiri project, supported by the European Union and implemented by the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES). The objective is clear: to promote open and inclusive governance, where the voices of all citizens are heard equally, and where women can find concrete pathways to leadership and decision-making roles.

The VIADuQ Charter serves as a compass for organizations seeking to make gender equality a lasting reality. It encourages parity within governing bodies, the adoption of fair internal rules, and the reduction of barriers that too often prevent women from accessing key positions.

Three organizations formalized this commitment through their signatures: Demain, FAWECOM, and Nomba Théâtre. Each, in its respective field (education, community mobilization, and artistic expression), shares the same conviction: building a more equitable society where human rights and social justice guide collective action. The CNDHL supports these efforts, ensuring that the principles of the VIADuQ Charter take root and endure. Through Shawiri, civil society’s voice is strengthened, and local governance practices move closer to genuine, sustainable, and representative inclusion.
