Training of Media Monitors in Burkina Faso

Within the component “Communication and Media Monitoring” of the “Project to Support the Credibility and Transparency of Elections in Burkina Faso” ("Projet d’Appui à la Crédibilité et à la Transparence des Elections au Burkina Faso" - PACTE-BF), the training of 16 agents, selected to integrate in the Media Monitoring Unit (MMU ) of the project, started on Monday, 22 June 2015.

 

Over a period of 5 days (22 to 26 June 2015), taking place in the offices of ECES in Ouagadougou (located in the annex building of the CENI), the training is conducted by the Media Monitoring Expert of Osservatorio di Pavia, detached for the PACTE-BF project, Giovanna Maiola, with the support of the project Communication Officer: Ms. Susie Bakajika. Participants will also benefit from the contribution of the Electoral Experts of the project, Franck Balme and Sadou Sidibé and the input of the Capacity Building Expert, Leandro Nagore.

 

At the opening session of the training, the participants had the honor to attend a presentation on the organization of the CENI and its mandate delivered by the Director of Communications of the CENI of Burkina Faso, Mr. Boris Edson Yaméogo. On this occasion, Mr. Yaméogo also outlined the specific expectations of the INEC in terms of communications and towards the MMU.

 

The training aims to provide participants with specific expertise in media monitoring methodology applied to the observation of the electoral cycle, the organization of the MMU, including its technical aspects, the objectives of the monitoring exercise, best practices for analyzing media content, and the legal framework covering elections and politics in Burkina Faso.

 

The trained agents will subsequently ensure the daily monitoring on the means of reflection by the media of the electoral process and the INEC, in order to enable INEC to be informed in real time of the situation and adapt its communication and to take any measures required, if needed.

 

The MMU aims to support the communication of the CENI in a sustainable way and to strengthen its credibility and transparency throughout the electoral process.

 

Implemented in a context where the electoral process is seen as a tool of closing the political and institutional transition in Burkina Faso, PACTE-BF project aims to contribute to the organization of credible, transparent and peaceful elections in Burkina Faso through capacity building of the stakeholders, via technical and operational support to the INEC and its branches. Specifically, the project provides technical and operational support to the CENI of Burkina Faso and its branches and contributes to capacity building of the institution in long-term.
