European Development Days 2016

IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 16 FOR PEACEFUL AND INCLUSIVE SOCIETIES

Opportunities and challenges in the security and development nexus

Around 50 % of the world's poorest currently live in conflict affected and fragile states. By 2025, it is estimated that this figure could increase to more than 80 %. Without security to travel, it is more difficult for children to attend school or for people to access health facilities. Without security and respect for the rule of law, investors are likely to go elsewhere. The drivers and root causes of conflict are issues such as poverty, inequality, and weak, ineffective institutions that do not serve their population. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development highlights the need for a comprehensive approach that recognises the interlinkages across the different goals. The panel will discuss the opportunities and challenges in relation to peace, security and development, and the implementation of SDG 16, which is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development; provide access to justice for all; and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

The event, organised by the European Union External Action Service, within the Context of the European Development Day, will include, among other,  the interventions of the following speakers:

  • Federica Mogherini , High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission;
  • Thijs Berman, Head of Election Observation Missions, European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES);
  • Marouane Bakit, Young Leader - Inclusive & Peaceful Societies, Morocco / Libya.

The final list of the panelists who will contributed at the high level panel will be communicated shortly.

The event will take place in the auditorium A3, Tout & Taxis, Brussels, Belgium on Wednesday, June 15 th 2016 from 18:00 to 19:30.
