Within the context of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EUSDGN), the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES) supported the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a 2-day workshop aimed at training the Community Voter Education Providers (VEP) ahead of the Ondo State Governorship Elections.
Held on 29-30 September 2020, the workshop sought to build VEP's capacities for the effective delivery of Voter Campaign.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, INEC Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Babalola Lebile, representing the Head of the VEP, expressed the hope that such training will equip the participants with skills and knowledge to carry out innovative and effective voter education at the grassroots.
ECES Senior Project Officer, Sylvestre Somo, in a goodwill message, stressed the importance of voter education in the electoral process through providing necessary information to enhance voters’ confidence while casting their votes.
Five modules were delivered by the INEC experts at the workshop. These are:
- Qualities of a Good voter educator.
- understanding of Basic Voter Education.
- Achieving Voter Education.
- Voters Code of Conduct 5) Voter Education strategy.
Sylvestre Somo delivered a presentation on the Voting Act, Electoral cycle, and International standards guiding the free and fair elections.
