Throughout 2014 and 2015, ECES conducted a series of five-day training on Leadership & Conflict Management Skills for Electoral Stakeholders (LEAD) in Zanzibar. Participants included representatives from the Electoral Commissions of Zanzibar and Tanzania, ECES, along with representatives of the SADC Electoral Support Network in Tanzania & Zanzibar (TEDG, Tanzania Ecumenical Dialogue Group).

The trainings were held as part of the EU-funded Project in Support of a Peaceful and Inclusive Electoral Process in Zanzibar - PROPEL Zanzibar. PROPEL seeks to support the implementation of a peaceful election in 2015 on the islands of Zanzibar by creating awareness among political leaders and a wide range of key electoral stakeholders of their responsibility in reducing the potential for the outbreak of conflicts.

Participants of the LEAD training expressed great satisfaction and comfort for the training’s ambiance, which did not resemble at all that of a workshop, and stressed its timely organisation, with constitutional elections and Presidential elections set to be held in April and October next year respectively, in both Tanzania and Zanzibar.

The trainers were Rindai Chipunde Vava (Executive Director of the SADC ESN), Victoria Florinders (Elections & Conflict Management Advisor) and Ljupka Guguchevska (Director of Training at Electoral Commission Macedonia).

ECES’ Executive Director, Fabio Bargiacchi, participated also to the final days presenting how to implement cascade training for long term capacity development and operational training ahead of Election Day.
